Birthday parties have gotten expensive.

After more than 10 years of planning children’s parties and events, I’ve watched birthday celebrations go from relatively simple gatherings to full-scale events. Between venues, entertainment, decorations, food, favors and activities, it doesn’t take much for the cost of a child’s birthday party to add up quickly.

But here’s something I learned after years of working with kids:

You don’t need an expensive venue to give them a party they’ll talk about for weeks.

Some of the parties kids enjoy most are the ones where they’re actually doing something together. That’s one of the reasons I created the Glam Squad DIY Party Guide—to give parents a way to create an exciting, organized birthday-party experience right at home without hiring an entire team of professionals.

Why a DIY Glam Party Is Such a Fun At-Home Birthday Idea

A glam party essentially turns your home into a mini beauty studio for the day.

Instead of trying to plan a dozen different activities, you can build the party around three main stations:

Hair Bar • Makeup Bar • Nail Bar

The girls can choose their looks, get glam, spend time with their friends and finish everything with a Glam Reveal and photos.

And no—you do not have to be a professional hairstylist, makeup artist or party planner to make it work.

The secret is keeping everything simple, age-appropriate and organized.

Step 1: Choose Your Glam Party Stations

Start by deciding which stations you want to offer.

For the complete experience, set up a Hair Bar, Makeup Bar and Nail Bar. Depending on your guest count and how many adults are helping, you can divide the girls into smaller groups and rotate through the stations or have everyone move through one station at a time.

For your Hair Bar, gather brushes, elastics, clips, bows and a few fun hair accessories. Choose hairstyles you’re actually comfortable creating. This is a birthday party—not a professional salon!

At the Makeup Bar, keep the looks simple and age-appropriate with things like blush, shimmer and lip gloss. Disposable applicators can also make things easier and more sanitary when you're working with a group.

For the Nail Bar, put out several fun polish colors and offer easy extras such as nail stickers, gems or simple nail art.

The goal isn't perfection.

It's the experience.

Step 2: Make Your At-Home Party Feel Special

You don't need an elaborate venue to make kids feel like they've walked into a special event.

A few inexpensive details can completely transform your space.

Put up signs for each station. Turn on a fun playlist. Give each guest a Glam Passport when she arrives. Create a designated area for photos and put out some cute photo props.

Suddenly, your kitchen table isn't just the kitchen table—it's the Nail Bar.

Another table and mirror can become the Makeup Bar, while a chair and basket of hair accessories create your Hair Bar.

It's all about creating the experience.

Step 3: Have Help—and Keep It Simple

One of my biggest tips after more than a decade of planning kids' parties is to think about your helpers before the party begins.

Hair will generally be the most time-consuming station, so this is where having another set of hands can make a huge difference.

If you're planning for around 10 kids, having at least two adults or older helpers involved can help everything run much more smoothly.

And remember: you don't have to entertain the kids every second.

They're at a birthday party with their friends! Give them opportunities to talk, listen to music, take pictures, watch their friends get ready and simply hang out.

You don't need every minute scheduled.

Step 4: Finish With a Glam Reveal

Once everyone has finished Hair, Makeup and Nails, bring the whole group together for the Glam Reveal.

Set up a simple photo backdrop, bring out some fun props and take individual glam shots, best-friend pictures, photos with the birthday girl and, of course, one big Glam Squad group photo.

It gives the party a fun finale—and gives you some adorable pictures to remember the day.

Want the Entire Party Planned for You?

If you're reading this thinking, This sounds adorable, but I really don't want to figure out every single detail myself, I completely understand.

That's exactly why I created the Glam Squad: Ultimate DIY Glam Party Guide.

I've taken what I've learned from more than 10 years of planning children's events and turned it into an easy-to-follow system designed to help parents recreate a Glam Party experience at home. During our days planning events, our hair, makeup, and nails party was by far our most popular event!
